Ohio Withdraws Proposed Kratom Ban After American Kratom Association Lobbies for Repeal
On Friday, August 9th, 2019, the American state of Ohio held a public hearing to discuss the possibility of classifying kratom as a Schedule 1 controlled substance. Currently, kratom is legal to buy, sell, and use in the state.
However, Ohio state legislators postponed the proposed rule change after members of the American Kratom Association, supported by more than 200 kratom advocates, spoke about their positive experiences with the plant at the hearing.
Members of the AKA cited the effectiveness of the recently implemented Kratom Consumer Protection Act and debunked the FDA’s previous claims that kratom is a highly addictive and deadly drug.
Following the event, the American Kratom Association reported that the Ohio Board of Pharmacy has reclassified the kratom ban as “To Be Refiled” (TBR), and issued congratulations to those who appeared at the hearing.
Kratom Community Member Kickstarts New Kratom Documentary
Earlier this month, kratom advocate and community member Drew Turner announced a kratom-centric documentary called The People of the Plant.
Launched via the Kickstarter platform, Turner described the film as “the true insider story of kratom” and promised it would feature the stories of kratom producers, researchers, and users. Turner stated that the film would release in late spring or early summer 2020 for donors before seeing a general release in 2021.
