Monument, Colorado USA Illegalizes Kratom Sales
On November 18th, 2019, the Board of Trustees in Monument, Colorado, USA met to evaluate Kratom’s legality. The board’s members voted 5-2 to prohibit the sale of kratom throughout the town of Monument. Board members Laurie Clark and Mayor Don Wilson were the only two who voted against the ban.
Originally, the motion was only intended to outlaw kratom products sold for human consumption. However, in a final amendment, Monument’s Board of Trustees removed this stipulation and transformed the motion into a broader ban.
Various Colorado residents — including regular kratom users — shared their opinions with the board during a public comment period. Nonetheless, the majority of Monument’s board members remained pro-ban.
Board trustee Ron Stephens noted that curtailing adolescent kratom use was a primary motivation for the ban.
“We aren’t restricting the use,” Stephens said. We aren’t trying to stop someone who is legitimately getting help, but at the same time we are setting a standard that we aren’t just putting it up on the shelves for kids to go through the stores and say ‘Oh, let’s try this.'”
Fortunately, kratom vendors based in Monument, Colorado will have 30 days to comply with the new policy by removing all kratom products for sale.
