The People of the Plant Kratom Documentary Cancelled
In our previous Biweekly Update, we covered kratom community member Drew Turner’s announcement of his upcoming documentary, The People of the Plant.
Unfortunately, on August 28th, Turner announced via Twitter that he would be cancelling the film “for now” due to personal matters outside of his control.
As Turner’s tweet states, those who donated to the film’s Kickstarter campaign will receive full reimbursement.
Michigan Kratom Bill Classifies Kratom as a Schedule 2 Substance
On August 20th, Michigan State Senator John Bizon, M.D., introduced a state bill that aims to classify kratom as a Schedule 2 substance. If the bill passes, the state of Michigan will regard kratom as a drug with “high abuse potential” and “limited medicinal value” as per the United States Controlled Substances Act.
“The currently unregulated drug kratom is both dangerous and addictive,” said Bizon. “There has been an alarming increase recently in the number of deaths from this relatively unknown drug. We must take measures to help prevent such tragedies and the continued abuse of this drug.”
The “Bizon Bill” has been passed to the Senate for further review. The bill has already ignited fervent opposition within local and online kratom communities.
