Maryland Introduces Kratom Ban Bill

Maryland Introduces Kratom Ban Bill

Maryland legislators have introduced a new bill (MD SB147) that classifies two of kratom’s primary alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, as Schedule I substances. Both alkaloids are largely responsible for the plant’s psychoactive effects.

If passed, the bill will ban the use, possession, and distribution of any products containing those two kratom alkaloids throughout the state of Maryland. As of now, kratom remains fully legal in Maryland with no restrictions on consumption or sale.

In response, the American Kratom Association is recommending Maryland kratom advocates to email Maryland’s legislators in protest of the ban. If you’d like to share your testimony and help keep kratom legal in Maryland, you can join the fight here.

Thailand Government Promises To Legalize Medical Kratom “Soon”

Back in December 2019, we covered Thailand’s plan to delist kratom as a narcotic and reclassify the plant under more lenient drug laws.

Now, Thailand Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin has announced that the country’s legislators are aiming to legalize kratom throughout the country by June 10th, 2020. The new kratom bill is expected to be forwarded to Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board on January 23rd, with a cabinet vote commencing by March 3rd.

For decades, Thailand controlled kratom via tight regulations and harsh legal punishments. Mr. Somsak estimated that Thailand’s police handled 50,000 kratom-related criminal cases between January and October 2019.
