American Kratom Association Promotes Sweeping Legislative Changes Across the United States
Several states — including Utah, Georgia, and Arizona — have already enacted modified versions of the AKA’s Kratom Consumer Protection Act. The bill, which was drafted by members of the AKA and the Botanical Education Alliance (BEA), promotes safe, regulated kratom use by:
Introducing manufacturing and labelling specifications for kratom products
Defining a legal age for the purchase, possession, and use of kratom
Limiting the amount of 7-hydroxymitragynine (one of kratom’s primary alkaloids) in kratom products to 2%
Introducing fines for infractions of these laws
Note that the exact stipulations of the bill vary from state-to-state. For example, Utah’s recently-passed KCPA establishes that vendors must register and submit each of their kratom products for testing.
In a recent update, the American Kratom Association announced that additional efforts are underway to advance the KCPA in Rhode Island, Missouri, Nevada, Oregon, Ohio, Kansas, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Illinois, Tennessee, and New York.
