Clearwater Florida Kratom Ban Shelved

Clearwater Florida Kratom Ban Shelved
Although an official ban was never announced, Clearwater City Council has ceased its investigation into a kratom ban.
Originally, the news of a tentative kratom ban in Clearwater broke in October of 2019. The announcement drew immediate opposition from American kratom supporters, including those in neighbouring Florida counties like Pinellas County. Not long after the news of a potential ban surfaced, a Change.org petition supported by ban detractors garnered over 2000 signatures.
Now, the city’s council is entrusting the state of Florida and the federal government with the plant’s regulation rather than attempting to pass a city-wide ban.
“In our review of the national state of [kratom] death investigations, 80 percent to 90 percent of them involve multi-drug toxicity issues; [kratom isn’t the] singular cause of death,” said Clearwater Police Chief Dan Slaughter to the city’s councilmembers. “Our recommendation right now is we don’t believe there is a need to regulate it. This is where we are.”
For now, customers can continue to buy kratom in Florida, with the exception of Sarasota county.
