As a plant, no two leaves from the kratom tree are exactly alike. Today’s kratom farmers know this best, and by using harvesting and drying techniques, they can produce a greater variety of kratom than ever before. These resulting kratom “variants” are often known as kratom strains.
Some kratom strains appear to be more energizing than others, while others seem to be more relaxing. But sometimes, the differences between kratom strains are less pronounced.
Take White Borneo and White Maeng Da kratom for example: User reports suggest that despite having different names, these two strains are similar in nearly every way.
White Borneo vs White Maeng Da: History & Name
As white kratom strains, White Borneo and White Maeng Da are supposedly made from youthful kratom leaves. Both strains are relatively easy to find and are carried by most online kratom vendors.
White Borneo is most likely named after Borneo, a large island in Southeast Asia that’s shared by the countries Malaysia, Indonesia, and Malay. The Indonesian region of Borneo, called Kalimantan, is where a considerable amount of kratom is exported. It’s also likely that most White Borneo is imported from Kalimantan.
Unlike White Borneo, White Maeng Da isn’t named after a specific location or region. Instead, its name is derived from the Thai phrase “Maeng Da” (แมงดา Mængdā), which translates to “pimp” in English. Some kratom enthusiasts and vendors believe that the “Maeng Da” name is a reference to the strain’s “upgraded” potency since the term “pimp” often carries the connotation of being “enhanced” or “improved” in North America. Other kratom community members have theorized that Maeng Da was once the specialty strain of a specific kratom farmer or vendor before becoming widely available.
White Borneo vs White Maeng Da: Effects
Most white kratom strains are described as energizing and euphoric, and White Borneo and White Maeng Da appear to be no exception.
According to user reports, White Borneo is strongly stimulating and strongly euphoric. In low-to-moderate quantities (1-2.5g), the strain can increase one’s energy and mood. White Borneo also seems to boast an above-average duration, with effects lasting about 3.5 hours at moderate doses (2.5-5g).

However, White Borneo and White Maeng Da also share similar setbacks. Neither strain appears to offer effective pain relief, which is typical of white kratom strains. And, as you might expect from strains that seem largely energizing, both strains don’t seem to offer much relaxation.
Which One Should I Choose?
In some cases, comparing kratom strains and deciding which one is best for you can be a long and tiring process. Fortunately, in the case of White Borneo and White Maeng Da, both strains seem to be remarkably similar. So you shouldn’t lose out on much by choosing one over the other.
White Maeng Da might have a slightly longer duration than White Borneo, but you might not notice any difference. On the other hand, White Borneo might be somewhat more euphoric than White Maeng Da — but again, most users probably won’t notice a difference.
