Red Borneo vs Red Thai

For many kratom users, red strains are the go-to option for pain relief and relaxation. Other strains, such as white and green kratom, can provide energy and focus. But generally, these strain colours can’t match the sedating and pain-relieving properties of red strains.

That said, not all red kratom strains provide the same experience. Due to differences in growing and harvesting techniques, the effects of red strains can vary from leaf to leaf.

This contrast becomes apparent when comparing strains like Red Borneo and Red Thai. Both are top sellers, and kratom vendors generally sell them at the same price. But depending on what effects you’re looking for, one of these strains might be preferable over the other.

So which one is best, and why? Let’s take a look!

History & Names

Red Borneo and Red Thai are among the most recognizable kratom strains on the market today. Both are widely available and well-stocked. However, each has a unique history behind its name.

Red Borneo

Most Red Borneo kratom is sold as Red Borneo. However, there have been reports of vendors marketing or relabeling Red Borneo under other names, such as Kalimantan, Ketapang, Jongkong, or Hulu.

Red Borneo is likely named after Borneo, one of the world’s largest islands. Borneo isn’t home to a single nation state: rather, its borders are shared between the Southeast Asian nations of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. But despite the regional divide, most Red Borneo kratom is sourced exclusively from Indonesia.

Red Thai

Like Red Borneo, the Red Thai name is pretty easy to decode. The strain seems to be named after Thailand, a country in Southeast Asia. However, because Thailand illegalized kratom cultivation in 1943, most Red Thai kratom is probably sourced from Indonesia.

Effects & Properties

Red Borneo and Red Thai are both red kratom strains, so it’s easy to assume that they offer similar effects. But upon reviewing user experiences with these strains, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Most users describe Red Borneo as strongly sedating and pain-relieving. When used in moderate-to-high doses (2.5-5g+), it may promote relaxation and decrease pain and discomfort. Users have also noted that Red Borneo has a longer-than-average duration, with effects lasting about four hours.

While Red Borneo appears to be potent, the strain does have some shortcomings. Because Red Borneo seems primarily relaxing, it probably won’t increase your energy levels. In addition, Red Borneo could be sedating enough to cause tiredness, especially when used in high amounts. Due to this risk of fatigue, Red Borneo might be unsuitable for daytime use.

Red Thai

If Red Borneo is a “classic” red strain, Red Thai is much more atypical. Users often describe Red Thai as moderately euphoric and sedating, but more energizing than other red strains.

Red Thai’s seemingly stimulating nature might be appealing to some, especially daytime kratom users. However, it could come at a cost. Red Thai appears to be less pain-relieving than other red strains, including Red Borneo. It might also have a shorter duration, with effects lasting about 3.5 hours on average.

Which Strain Should I Choose?

Red Borneo and Red Thai seem to excel in different ways. As a result, you should choose the strain that best suits your preferences.

If you’re seeking pain relief and relaxation above all else, Red Borneo is likely the better option. The strain seems to be much more sedating than Red Thai. Just don’t expect Red Borneo to give you a significant energy boost.

Have you ever heard the expression “different strokes for different folks?” The same is true in the kratom world. Different kratom strains can have different properties, making some strains better choices for some over others.

This certainly seems to be the case with Red Borneo and Red Thai. But it’s important to note that kratom is often subjective. Just as kratom’s effects can vary from leaf-to-leaf, they can also vary from person-to-person. As a result, your experiences with these strains may differ.
