Kratom capsules are a convenient way to consume kratom. Unlike kratom powders, capsules are pre-measured and ready to use, making them a perfect option for kratom users on-the-go.
However, even though kratom capsules are intended for consumption, their packages don't always include instructions for use. This is because, in some countries, kratom vendors can face legal consequences for including use instructions on their kratom products. When a vendor implies that their kratom product is intended for consumption, that product and vendor are often held to an entirely different set of laws. For instance, Canadian kratom vendors can only sell kratom as a non-consumable good.
It's sensible for kratom vendors to comply with local laws. But for consumers, the lack of information for kratom capsule use can be confusing and even harmful. In some cases, it may cause them to take more kratom than intended. And because the side effects of taking too much kratom can be unpleasant, it's essential to get your dosage right.
So, how much is too much? Let's take a look!
The ideal kratom dosage can vary widely from one person to another. Many factors — such as your weight, frequency of kratom use, and even the last time you ate — can affect how many kratom capsules you'll need to take to experience the plant's benefits.
It'd be great to have a dosage calculator that accounts for these factors -- but for now, such a thing doesn't exist. Instead, we distinguish between low, moderate, and high kratom doses of kratom powder and recommend that new users start at the lower end of the spectrum.
Low dose: 0-2.5g of kratom powder
Moderate dose: 2.5-5g of kratom powder
High dose: 5g+ of kratom powder
However, in this case, we're dealing with kratom capsules, not powder, so things get a little tricky. Most kratom capsules contain about 0.5g of kratom powder, but others can contain more or less. For this reason, determining how much kratom is in your kratom capsules is the first step in determining your ideal dosage. From here, the math is pretty straightforward.
Note that we calculated these dosage guidelines on the assumption that your kratom capsules contain standard kratom powder. Kratom capsules containing enhanced kratom powder are often more potent and require a different set of dosage guidelines.
0.5g Kratom Capsules containing standard, unenhanced kratom powder (Size 0)
Low dose: 1-5 capsules
Moderate dose: 5-10 capsules
High dose: 10+ capsules
0.7g Kratom Capsules containing standard, unenhanced kratom powder (Size 00)
Low dose: 1-4 capsules
Moderate dose: 4-7 capsules
High dose: 7+ capsules
1g Kratom Capsules containing standard, unenhanced kratom powder (Size 000)
Low dose: 1-2 capsules
Moderate dose: 2-5 capsules
High dose: 5+ capsules
Remember: If you're new to kratom, start with a low dose. Starting at a low dose will drastically reduce your chances of experiencing the side effects of taking too much kratom. These side effects can include nausea, constipation, sleep problems, temporary erectile dysfunction, itching, and sweating. (Cinosi et al., 2015, page 6) Wait 24 hours after consumption to assess your reaction before gradually increasing your dosage.
More isn't always better. If you take too many kratom capsules, you'll probably know by way of some unpleasant side effects. Often, these side effects are uncomfortable enough to turn first-time kratom users away from the plant for good.
Thankfully, the side effects of taking too much kratom are well-documented, so there shouldn't be many surprises if it happens to you. One research team identified the most common side effects as nausea, constipation, sleep problems, temporary erectile dysfunction, itching, and sweating. (Cinosi et al., 2015, page 6)
If you keep your dose low, you're much less likely to experience any side effects from kratom capsules. But as your dose increases, so does the risk of side effects.
Aside from the personal factors we covered earlier (weight, tolerance, etc.), the quality of the kratom in question can also affect how many kratom capsules you should take.
Kratom's effects stem from naturally-occurring compounds in the plant called "alkaloids." Researchers recently concluded that alkaloid content “… is highly variable in genetically similar kratom plant material." (Todd et al., 2020, pg 8) As a result, the potency of kratom products — including kratom capsules — can vary. And if a kratom capsule product is potent, you might be able to take less compared to other, less potent products.
That said, it can be difficult to determine the potency of kratom capsules. Some vendors include details about their products' alkaloid content on the packaging. In most cases, the details include percentages of mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, two of kratom's primary alkaloids. However, researchers haven't determined a reference range for either alkaloid, making it difficult to compare product potencies.
If you've shopped around for kratom capsules, you've probably noticed that there are various kinds on the market. That's because kratom vendors create their kratom capsules with different types of kratom, or kratom strains.
Depending on the strain and colour in question, some kratom strains can be more energizing or sedating than others. And as you might expect, these varying characteristics can affect how many capsules you'll need to take to get your desired effects.
For example, let's say you prefer relaxing kratom. Users generally describe the Red Bali kratom strain as relaxing, so a few Red Bali capsules might provide you with a satisfying level of relaxation. But with White Maeng Da, a strain that's seemingly energizing, it might take 1-2 capsules to attain the same level of relaxation.
Not all kratom capsules contain standard kratom powder. Some vendors enhance the kratom powder in their capsules by fortifying it with additional alkaloids. This process can drastically increase the potency of the capsules. And, as you might expect, it can also mean that less is more.
Higher-potency kratom capsules can offer more overall value. But they can also increase your chances of experiencing unpleasant side effects like nausea and dizziness.
Ensure that your kratom capsules are unenhanced before following the dosage guidelines in this post. If the capsules you have on hand are enhanced, follow the directions on the packaging (if applicable). If there aren't any directions, start with one capsule and wait 24 hours to assess your reaction before gradually increasing your dosage.
It's tough to argue with the convenience of kratom capsules. They provide an easy and discrete way to enjoy kratom wherever you are.
But to ensure that you have a convenient experience with kratom capsules, it's important to get your dosage right. Taking too few capsules might leave you unsatisfied. In contrast, taking too many capsules might send you running for the nearest bathroom. By making some calculations beforehand, you should be on the fast-track to discovering the ideal kratom capsule dosage for you.
